Robots are becoming the hands of the physical world. They build, carry, tend, and repair, and every year they do more of it. But the way we drive them was designed for a narrow kind of person: steady hands, strong arms, expensive rigs. The robotics economy is being built for the able and the equipped, and it is quietly inheriting every exclusion of the economy before it.
Yet no action begins in the hands. In the premotor cortex, every reach, every gesture, every brushstroke exists as intention, milliseconds before any muscle moves. The hands were only ever the middleman.
We taught machines to obey our precision. What happens when they can read our intention?
Premotor Robotics is building that interface. Signals read from the scalp, interpreted by learned models, given a body, within bounds that people set. The first body is a robotic arm painting inside the edges of a canvas, because painting is the one act that does not demand precision. It rewards unadulterated human intent. What arrives on the linen is loose, and the looseness is not error. It is the visible trace of a mind moving through a machine. The less mechanical the result, the more human it is. We are painters and engineers, and we are building the first rig now.
The first people this belongs to are the people the economy of hands leaves out: those living with paralysis, ALS, limb difference, injury, age. Creative agency first, practical agency next, with clinical partners funding the long research. Then everyone else. Painting is proof one. It will not be the last.
Mediocre interfaces ask people to become more like machines. We are building the one that lets machines take direction from what is most human: what you mean.
